Here is a snapshot of what your child will learn this year: ◦ Names and sounds for all letters ◦ 126 High Frequency Words – 58 by this point ◦ How to blend sounds to read words ◦ Read books on an individualized level ◦ Write eight connected sentences on a topic ◦ Numbers to 100 ◦ Addition ◦ Subtraction ◦ Field Trip – KinderSwim – YMCA spring Explorations V – Downtown Lakeland – May 27th

◦ Students should already know the names of all 26 letters and be working toward mastery of the sounds they make. ◦ Sight Words/High Frequency Words – list for each 9 weeks – 126 words – 58 by now!!! ◦ AR (Accelerated Reader) – learning the sight words will help your child be an independent reader by the end of the year. ◦ Read every night to your child. Ask and answer questions about and retell stories. ◦ Students need to be able to identify characters, setting and major events in a story. ◦ We write ALL day long in reading, math, science and social studies! By the end of the year, we expect about 8 complete sentences. ◦ Students will learn to use proper spacing, capitalization, punctuation meaningful content.

◦ Students will learn count to 100 ◦ Count on from a given number ◦ Addition & Subtraction fluency to 5 (flashcards) understanding to 10 ◦ ID if a group of objects is greater than, less than, or equal to another group ◦ SMAD – every Wednesday – school-wide self-pacing program Goals for SMAD - free choice By end of first quarter – Count objects to 10 By the end of 2 nd quarter – count objects to 20 By the end of the 3 rd quarter – addition facts to 10 By the end of the year – subtraction facts to 10

Breakfast and lunch are free for all students. Breakfast is 7:30 – 7:50am Students enter classroom, morning routine Language Arts block 8:15-10:45 – Reading and writing Our lunch times fall between 10:55-11:37. See teacher for exact time. You are welcome to join your child for lunch after signing in at the office. Space is limited in the cafeteria. Math is after lunch – SMAD every Wednesday Science/Social Studies/Computer Lab/Library Specials 1:55-2:45 Dismissal at 3:00pm Please be in the car line at dismissal. PLEASE write all dismissal changes in your child’s agenda.

Monthly homework (language arts and math) ◦ Extra practice or accelerated materials are available and will be sent in addition to the monthly homework. ◦ Lined paper – spacing/lowercase letters Practice the sight words daily. Read each night with your child! Return all pieces at the end of the month.

Report cards are letter-based – we will be grading papers and entering percentages Knowledge of letter names and the sounds they make as well as recognition of the sight words are heavily weighted. Retention concerns will be noted on this report card. Conferences can be scheduled with teachers upon request.

Please make every effort to have your child to school on time. It is difficult for them to have a strong day when it begins behind. 3 Tardies = 1 unexcused absence Students must be walked into the main office to sign in Breakfast closes at 7:50 – so please make sure your child eats at home if you are going to be late. Please put a note in the agenda regarding absences. Make up work - Importance of being in class
