Agro-processing A common and traditional definition of agro-processing industry refers to the subset of manufacturing that processes raw materials and intermediate products derived from the agricultural sector. Benefits/ advantages of Agro-Processing- Perishable goods are most suitable for processing Processing is done to satisfy the consumer needs during periods when crops are out of season Produce is processed for export, to extend the shelf-life of the product, and to make handling easier and to improve the taste Processing add value to the product Agro-processing extends the shelf-life of the product, allowing it to last longer. Some product has a better financial and economic viability when processed Disadvantages of Agro-processing Costly/expensive for the technology Require Bulk quantities Good training required to produce a quality end product Reduces spoilage

Sorting and Grading Sorting is the removal of the good from the bad Grading is the separation of the produce according to shape, size, colour, and texture Sorting and grading is done to facilitate pricing and consumer choice and to ensure the produce meets international standards

Packaging Packaging takes various forms such as plastic, paper, boxes and foil. Packaging is important for the following reasons: Activity: Why is packaging important in products that have been processed? It identifies the product and the manufacturer. e.g colour, logo. It protects the product. It makes the product appealing It is used to extend the life cycle of the product It ensures standardized quantities It makes handling of the product easier Disadvantages- Expensive (technology) - Requires expert handling

Storage Storage takes place in silios, warehouses and other places of mass accumulation. Storage serves the following functions- It provides a steady and regular supply of farm produce It may prevent price fluctuations It extends the life of the product It gives some protection to the product
