Gothic cathedrals were huge compared to most buildings in the middle ages They were decorated elaborately on the inside as well as the outside

Greater height was gained by pointing the arches that supported cathedral roofs

The outside corners of these buildings sometimes had statures of Gargoyles

On the outside, these elaborate churches had structures called FLYING BUTTRESSES These structures allowed for the Gothic churches to be the largest buildings yet

Doorways often were decorated with detailed statues

Windows were made of stained glass They depicted stories of the saints and from the bible

Some churches were so elaborate that they took over 100 years to build, with the simple tools of their day For this reason many had two very different looking spires

This church in Germany was started in 1200, and was finished in 1800
