D. Luís Bridge is localized in the second biggest city of Portugal, Oporto.

D. Luís Bridge, built in the XIX century over the Douro River (Oporto), was designed by engineer Teófilo Seyrig, disciple and collaborator of Gustave Eiffel. The building, put out to tender in 1880, was given in 1881, to the Society Willebroeck in Brussels. It replaced the Pênsil bridge because it was no longer safe for the trade between Lisbon and Gaia (it was sinking down very quickly).

Having begun in 1881, the magnificent bridge of D. Luís ended 5 years later and was inaugurated on 31 st October 1886. It was one of the most important works in the road plan, on the reign of D. Luís.

D. Luís Bridge has 2 metal plates, supported by a big arch of iron with 172 meters of rope and shot 44.6 per 5 pillars. It has about 395m long and 8m wide. The bridge weighs 3,054 tones, equivalent to almost 611 elephants! It has got more than 3 000 tones of steel. The bridge was illuminated by 40 artistic lamps gas.

Bridge Luís I Designed by the engineer Teófilo Seyring the Luis I bridge was inaugurated on 31 October 1886. It has got of two metal plates supported by a wide iron conch and five pillars. The upper plate is 391,25m long and the lower plate is 174m long.

On 2 nd August 2005, the subway crossed the bridge for the first time, in a experimental trip.

The beautiful bridge is a representative symbol of the "architecture of iron“ and has become (along with the Tower of Clérigos) an ex-líbris in the city of Oporto.
