LADWP Pumped Hydro 2 Competitive Rates History LADWP & DWR: Agreement - 1966 / Built 1972 – 1978 Major repairs: 2004 – 2013 turbines, stators, transformers … Function DWR – water conveyance & energy LADWP – peaking, regulation, reserves Capacity 6 reversible pump turbine / generators – 271 MW each 1 conventional pelton turbine – 56 MW Hydraulic head – 1063 Feet (upper reservoir to plant) Net Dependable output - 1,175 MW (tunnel limit)
3
LADWP Pumped Hydro 3 Competitive Rates Generation Originally planned as a “sister” to a nuclear plant Couples well with large thermal units for peaking /cycling Regulation Typical to operate 1 to 2 units in condense mode Pump Balancing net water flows with economics and reliability Full pump only – appr. 240 MW (no partial pump capability) Contingency Reserves Provides system value in spin and non spin
4
LADWP Pumped Hydro 4 Competitive Rates Future Usage – similar as past: Over Generation Load Following Regulation / System Inertia Contingency Reserves Fleetwide changes Refurbish U7 & Plant Automation - 2017 Rebuilding for operational flexibility
5
LADWP Pumped Hydro 5 Competitive Rates Potential overgeneration primarily in winter and spring
