Now Some MORE steps… Belinda Oram

What happens if the equation is not simple? We SIMPLIFY first and then solve!

Think of TILES to simplify Put the x tiles together and remove any that cancel out.

Rewrite the formula and solve. -2 22 = 5

Simplify and Solve You may use tiles to simplify if you wish.

3 x How do we solve this? Again, think of tiles. ()()() Means 3 sets of these tiles Put like tiles together Result? NOW SOLVE!

Solving the Same Equation Mathematically You must multiply everything inside the bracket by the number outside the bracket. = 12 Now solve as usual!

Now Some Practice Enter your answers into your responders as you solve each to make sure you are “getting” it. Show your work on your handout! CHECK

Now what happens if you have a variable (letter) on both sides? Take a deep breath and realize that there is just ONE MORE STEP and you already know how to deal with it! You still have to get all the numbers on one side of the equation and all the letters on the other.

Start as you usually would. - 2 Rewrite Now you have to get rid of the x on the right side of the equation. Rewrite again Solve by dividing both sides by 2 2 2

Put the steps of solving this equation in the right order. Divide both sides by 4 Add 2x to both sides Add 4 to both sides Check
