Different type of colony Middle colonies ruled by landowners – Not representative government like New England Freedom of religion throughout the region

New York Originally a colony of people from Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland Good seaport that became a center for shipping 1691 New York allowed to elect representatives

New Jersey Area of land between Hudson and Delaware rivers Attracted colonists with freedom of religion and a representative government – Allowed to make laws and set tax rates No natural harbor so the colony did not develop

Pennsylvania Founded in 1680 by William Penn Different type of religious beliefs Quakers – Believe everyone has an inner light – No church service or leaders – Refused to use force and fight in wars

William Penn Designed Philadelphia Wrote Pennsylvania's first constitution Believed the land belonged to NA and paid for the land 1701 Charter of Liberties – Granted colonists the right to elect representatives

Delaware Southern tip of Pennsylvania 1704 Charter of Privileges – Allowed the area to elect representatives – Still ruled under the governor of PA
