Looking at the articles In your groups, read through the articles and determine the powers granted to either the national government, or the states’ governments Fill in the proper portion of the graphic organizer and be ready to share

State Government Powers All powers not given to the national gov’t Create state court system Appoint military officers Taxation Enforce laws passed by Congress

National Government Powers Declare war and wage war Make treaties Settle disputes between states Directs the operation of land and naval forces Some power through congress Request money from the states (but they have no power to collect it)

Discussion How did the national government fund its programs? What did the monetary system look like? How were national laws enforced? How were amendments to the Articles enacted? What was the role of the executive branch?

Weaknesses of the Articles Nat’l gov’t can’t collect taxes No nat’l currency No nat’l court system No executive branch One vote per state regardless of population Nat’l gov’t had no power to regulate trade 9/13 to pass a law (2/3rds) 13/13 would need to ratify the articles
