Characteristics of Civilization

Stable Food Supply 1 When a society has enough food to feed its citizens. A complex society can thrive only if its members have the food they need to survive. They have to develop technologies and ways to adapt the geographical challenges such as little rain or unfertile soil

Social Structure 2 Civilizations have a complex organization, or social structure. A social structure includes different jobs and social levels. People at high levels have a greater status (importance) than others. These are called “classes”

Government 3 A system of government to direct people’s behavior and make life orderly. Government dictates who or what has the power, how much power the people have, and what is right and wrong. Without government, a civilization cannot maintain order or accumulate wealth and land.

Religion 4 Most civilizations, especially ancient ones, have a religious system. A religious system includes a set of beliefs, usually in a god or gods, together with forms of worship. Religion bound the people together in a common way of life. Religion also helped to set behavior boundaries and expectations. In ancient times, fear of punishment from a god or gods motivated good deeds and actions.

The Arts 5 All civilizations have highly developed culture, including the arts. Arts include creative forms of expression such as painting, architecture, and music. Arts reflects fashion trends, religious beliefs, historical events, and cultural values and traditions.

Technology 6 New forms of technology, or practical tools and inventions. They would use these discoveries and inventions to make life easier. Inventions would often aid in the growth of food, the development of housing or city planning, ease of travel, or comfort of living.

Writing 7 A final characteristic of civilization is a highly developed written language. The ability to keep records and communicate through written means. Successful civilizations had effective and standardized ways to write their language.
