Volcanoes The earths crust is broken into pieces called Plates. The ‘pacific ring of fire’ is an areas around the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanoes occur (happen).

Volcanoes Molten (liquid) rock underneath the earths crust is called magma. Molten (liquid) rock above the earths crust is called lava.

Volcanoes Types of Volcano: 1.Active: Still erupts regularly. For example, Mt Etna, Italy. 2.Dormant: Has not erupted for a long time, but may erupt again. For example, Cotopaxi, Ecuador. 3.Extinct: Has not erupted in historic times. For example, Slemish, Co. Antrim.
