Introduction and location located in the north of Spain and the south of France. The Basques people are a nation. This group of people sees themselves as linked together, as brothers and sisters in some way.

Information cntd. The Basque country has 7 provinces (four in Spain and three in France). The total Basque population is approximately 3 million with 92% being Spanish citizens. A stateless nation Does not have a national homeland that overlaps into more than one state.

Related to the stateless nation term, ethno-nationalism. Ethno-nationalism leads to separation. There is not a civil war, and even violence exists, this is not major.

The Basques are considered as a nation because these people share same commonalties, they share the same culture. There are different characteristics of the Basque culture. 1. Euskera, the Basque language 2. Particular Basque food 3. Festivals and traditions 4. Basque sports 5. Universities 6. Art and literature

History & development of the conflict The Basque history is interconnected with Spanish and French history. There are different keys in their history that will help us to understand the conflict in the their region. geographic enclave Romans, Celtics and Visigoths the 16 th century the Carlist Wars Fuerismo 1895 dictatorship of Primo de Rivera 1959, Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA)
