Mind your Manners Getting an interview and more By: Sara-Beth O’Connor

I guarantee the following information will be valuable for the rest of your life. Because those with manners are more likely to get what they want.

Etiquette 101 Look the part: Dress nice for interviews/ selling ads/ taking photos Act the part: Always say please and thank you When interrupting classroom instructors, always apologize Ask for permission to take photos

Introductions When you go to report in your school follow these rules: 1. Let a teacher know where you are going 2. Go directly to the room and “gage” what the situation is (listen/look) 3. Knock nicely/go in and go straight to a teacher without shouting out to your friends and saw…

Hello, I am so sorry for interrupting. My name is _________________ and I am a staff member of the _____________________. I am writing a story on ________________and I wanted to know if I could borrow _________________ for a few minutes.

Practice

Now we will ask for an interview Line up outside the classroom door and enter one by one and ask to pull a student out of class to interview.

Emails Rite the email in a in a world document first. Reed it out loud. Spell chek it. Double check the email address, subject heeding and attach any flies. Then send.

Your Turn Open Firefox and Microsoft Word Write your email in the Microsoft Word document Create a new document and write five appropriate questions. Save this file in your home drive as: interviewquestions Sign into your school gmail account (just like logging in on the computers) Copy paste the email from Word, attach the document, put in a subject heading and then email it to: oconnors@glcomets.net

Texting Avoid this. You lose emotion and credibility. Only use it to set up follow up interviews if necessary.

Secretaries and custodians What do they do in your building? Aka: shy should we be extra nice to them?

Other items You never know who you will need to contact next. Don’t burn bridges (don’t talk smack about people no matter what)
