2 Maurice, Louisiana is a small village in South Louisiana. Maurice is known as the "Gateway to Vermilion Parish”. Look at the map. Can you find Vermilion Parish?

3 The small Louisiana village was named Maurice after Maurice Villien. Both Maurice Villien and his wife Marie Chati had a lot of land. When they were married they created a plantation. That is how Maurice got it's name. It was incorporated in 1911. Maurice and Marie Villen had two sons John and Joseph Villen. Joseph Villen was mayor until 1928. Do you know who the mayor is now?

4  The mayor until 2010 is Robert H. “Bob” Ferguson. The councilmen are Troy Catalon, Gary J. Villien and Darin J. Desormeaux.

5 Churches, businesses and schools were built through the years. This is a picture of the first St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in 1893. Many things have changed through the years.

6 Maurice, Louisiana is a village between Abbeville and Lafayette. It is a small incorporated village with 642 citizens. Maurice has a Post Office. It has one school. Maurice Elementary is a Pre K through 6th grade school. When the children get 7th grade they transfer to North Vermilion High School in Leroy.

7 The Maurice schools have gone through changes. In 1885 Broussard Cove School was built. Broussard Cove school was moved in 1899 to Maurice. The Maurice school was placed on the Jr. High School list. In 1977. the largest graduating class ever with 49 graduates graduated. In 1980, the last class graduated from Maurice High School.Maurice schools

8 The same year in September the high school moved to a new location. Maurice Elementary became a K-6 School. Maurice Elementary

9  The High School consolidated with 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12 graders in Meaux, Leroy and Indian Bayou. That is when North Vermilon High School was formed. North Vermilon High School  A 1981 fire destroyed the Maurice school on February 11th. In 1986 the present Maurice elementary opened. It is now named “Cecile Picard at Maurice.”

10 Through the years, Maurice experienced floods, wars, hurricanes, and other tragedies. Their resources like other Vermilion Parish areas are farming, hunting and fishing. Maurice is a great village to visit. It is named the "Gateway to Vermilion Parish!"
