Do Now: Author’s Purpose Read the first two paragraphs of the excerpt from The Red Badge of Courage. Write one sentence stating the author’s purpose: They provide insight into the mind of the main character. They foreshadow a disagreement within the regiment. They establish the intelligence of the main character. They begin to develop a melodramatic mood.

Objectives: The students will be able to draft a constructed response of at least a “2” rating in order to be able to pass the Keystone test in literature.

Focus Lesson: Constructed… Direct Instruction: tag it a “3” The Scoring Rubric Guidelines for Writing Guided Practice: examples of responses Independent Practice: using the constructed response planning template, draft a response explaining how the central character evolves from the beginning to the end of the passage. You may work in pairs. (30 classwork points)
