Do Now: Author’s Purpose  Read the first two paragraphs of the excerpt from The Red Badge of Courage.  Write one sentence stating the author’s purpose:  They provide insight into the mind of the main character.  They foreshadow a disagreement within the regiment.  They establish the intelligence of the main character.  They begin to develop a melodramatic mood.

3. Objectives:  The students will be able to draft a constructed response of at least a “2” rating in order to be able to pass the Keystone test in literature.
