Economic Trade Networks An economic trade network is a system of trade routes used by an area. These trade routes help: Expand the wealth of an area Increase the goods and services available Allow for the spread of ideas

Silk Road One of the first economic trade networks was found on the Silk Road in China. It was 4,000 miles long Silk, porcelain, tea, incense, and spices were all traded along this route.

It was a dangerous road. Travelers faced heat, lack of water, sandstorms, blizzards, and robbers.

Sahara Salt Trade In the 1300s, the salt trade was very important in Africa. Salt was precious because it was needed to stay alive and to preserve food.

A trade network from South Africa to the Sahara developed. Salt, gold, slaves, ivory and cola nuts were all things traded along this route.

Spice Trade In the 1400s-1600s the spice trade had become an important trade for Europeans. Spices were used to preserve food and improve its flavor.

They traded pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves with Asia.

Prince Henry, Vasco Da Gama, Columbus, Magellan and Cabot all searched for trade routes to help get the spices Europeans wanted.

Trade Then….. Historic trade depended on things such as the astrolabe, compass, ships, camels, etc to be successful.

They traded for things to help them survive and to keep their food fresh. Trade was successful but dangerous and took a great deal of time.

Trade Today…. Today we continue to trade. We use trucks, boats, trains, planes, and other forms of transportation to distribute goods.

We depend on satellites, computers, tracking systems, and other technology to ensure that trade is efficient and successful.

We trade resources such as oil, natural gas, lumber, coal, food, etc.

We also trade ideas such as democracy, religion, ethics, etc.
