9 Children often haven’t learnt politeness strategies that adults use almost unconsciously in social interaction. Sometimes they have already picked them up. Wholly appropriate to comment on them and WHY in that particular context they may/ may not be being used. Eg. children are more likely to be use politeness strategies with more distant relatives/carers/ friends than parents/siblings. A very young child is less likely to be familiar with the strategies than an older child. 12 The ‘difference’ model expounded by theorists such as Deborah Tannen and John Gray (Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus) suggested that it wasn’t a ‘deficit’ based on social conditioning, but an intrinsic difference in the brains of men and women that meant they approached conversation differently.
