1
Hamlet Suicidal Tendencies and Self- Deprecation Workshop
2
Labeling Make a key at the top of your paper using your highlighters Sample: Blue=Statement Pink=Proof Yellow=Commentary Label the topic sentence Label the transition at the end Highlight statement, proof, and commentary using your key
3
Eyeballing Percentages Look at what you highlighted. Is more than 15-20% of what they wrote pink? Your partner needs to shorten quotes, develop commentary, or both. Write which one(s) you think they need to do If quotes are too long, cross out the part(s) of the quote you think are unnecessary for their purposes.
4
Citations Does each quote include a citation? Check format. Citation should be in Act. Scene. Line using one of the following formats. 1.4.27-30 OR I.iv.27-30 Be sure that the period comes AFTER the end parenthesis “ blah blah…” (1.4.27-30).
5
Are these questions answered? What does Hamlet’s tendency to think deeply about suicide and its consequences tell us about him? How does self-deprecation tie to suicidal tendencies? NOTE: Suicidal tendencies DO NOT = insanity
6
Evaluate Connections Draw a line between the first quote’s commentary and the claim. Evaluate if you have made this connection in your commentary. If yes, draw a check mark next to the line If no, draw and “x” on the line. Repeat with your second (and third, etc) quote Only draw a check mark if the connection is clear and explicit. I should not need to take a leap of faith to get where you are going.
7
Language Register Check Are they staying in formal register? Look back at notes to check. Includes using “I,” “you,” “me,” “my,” and “we” Use a pen or a pencil to circle any register drops and write “register” next to these circled areas.
8
Share! The stance you took The text support you used The way you structured your essay Did you do statement-proof-commentary? Compare. Tell your partner one thing that they could do to improve Can be ideas, structure, or support Turn your paper over and write down your partner’s viewpoint and the citation of the support they used
