3 P AST P ERFECT - U SE We use the Past Perfect to talk about an event or situation in the past that happened before other past events. The police arrested the man who had broken into my house. Mary overslept because she had forgotten to set the alarm clock. Compare: When I arrived, she left. (I arrived and then she left) When I arrived, she had left. (She left and then I arrived)
