8 th Grade Science Do Now Monday, October 29, 2012 On page __, make 5 observations about the map at your table.

8 th Grade Science Today’s Schedule 1. Do Now 2. Air Pressure Candle Activity 3. Gateways Reading: Air Pressure 4. Four Squares Essential Question How does energy from the Sun drive Earth’s weather and climate? Vocabulary Pre-AP Homework Grade-Level Homework Homework Due Friday! QUIZ ON FRIDAY Monday, October 29, 2012 Global Winds Easterlies Westerly Trade Winds Coriolis Effect Ocean Currents Jet Stream Global Pattern High Pressure Low Pressure Front Weather Systems Deep Ocean Currents Atmospheric Movement

8 th Grade Science Air Pressure Candle Activity 1.Put on your safety goggles. 2.Carefully place the candle in the center of the page in the water. 3.Light the candle. 4.Let the candle burn for about 1 minute. 5.Swiftly invert the test tube over the lit candle so the opening of the test tube is below the surface of the water but not touching the pan. Hold the test tube in place for a few minutes while you make observations. Monday, October 29, 2012

8 th Grade Science Air Pressure Candle Activity Monday, October 29, 2012 On page __ of your INB, record your observations. As a table, discuss possible explanations for your observations. Answer the following questions: 1.What gas is needed for the candle to burn? 2.What happened once you inverted the test tube? Why? 3.What happened to the temperature of the air inside the test tube once it was inverted over the flame? 4.What happened to the air pressure inside the test tube?

8 th Grade Science Gateways Reading: Air Pressure Monday, October 29, 2012 Read: Winds and Air Pressure On page __ of your INB, divide your paper into four squares and answer the questions. What is a high pressure system? What is a low pressure system? What type of weather is associated with a high pressure system? What type of weather is associated with a low pressure system?

8 th Grade Science Do Now Tuesday, October 30, 2012 Examine the map of the United States. On page __ of your INB, answer the following questions. 1.Near which city is the high pressure system located? 2.Near which cities are the low pressure systems located? 3.Which locations are most likely experiencing clear, dry weather? 4.Which location is most likely experiencing rainy weather? 5.Which location is most likely experiencing high winds?

8 th Grade Science Today’s Schedule 1. Do Now 2. “Crushing It” 3. Analysis Essential Question How does energy from the Sun drive Earth’s weather and climate? Vocabulary Pre-AP Homework Grade-Level Homework Homework Due Friday! QUIZ ON FRIDAY Tuesday, October 30, 2012 Global Winds Easterlies Westerly Trade Winds Coriolis Effect Ocean Currents Jet Stream Global Pattern High Pressure Low Pressure Front Weather Systems Deep Ocean Currents Atmospheric Movement

8 th Grade Science Today we will… 8.10(B) identify how global patterns of atmospheric movement influence local weather using weather maps that show high and low pressures and fronts Today’s Objective: Examine high and low pressure systems and the weather associated with each type of system. Tuesday, October 30, 2012

8 th Grade Science Crushing It On page __ of your INB, draw an illustration of the setup and answer the following questions. 1.What energy transformations are occurring? 2.What happens as the water inside the can begins to boil? 3.How does the density of the air inside the can compare to the air outside the can? Tuesday, October 30, 2012

8 th Grade Science Crushing It Analysis On page__, record your observations and draw an illustration of the can. 1.How did the air pressure cause the can to change? 2.How does this activity relate to the Air Pressure Candle Activity we did yesterday? Tuesday, October 30, 2012

8 th Grade Science DO NOW Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2012 Examine the map at your table. On page __ of your INB, make 3 observations about the map and make a prediction about what the different symbols signify.

8 th Grade Science Today’s Schedule 1. Do Now 2. Reading: Air Masses & Fronts 3. Foldable 4. Card Sort 5. Weather Stations 6. Exit Ticket Essential Question How does energy from the Sun drive Earth’s weather and climate? Vocabulary Pre-AP Homework Grade-Level Homework Homework Due Friday! QUIZ ON FRIDAY Global Winds Easterlies Westerly Trade Winds Coriolis Effect Ocean Currents Jet Stream Global Pattern High Pressure Low Pressure Front Weather Systems Deep Ocean Currents Atmospheric Movement Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2012

8 th Grade Science Today we will… 8.10(B) identify how global patterns of atmospheric movement influence local weather using weather maps that show high and low pressures and fronts Today’s Objective: Identify symbols that indicate high and low pressure fronts. Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2012

8 th Grade Science Reading: Air Masses & Fronts Read: Air Masses & Fronts Using pages __ - __ of your INB, create the foldable. Include: 1)the name of the front (Warm Front, Cold Front, Stationary Front, Occluded Front) 2)a diagram of the front 3)a description of the front formation 4)the weather associated with each front Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2012

8 th Grade Science Card Sort Complete the card sort with a partner. Add the symbols for each front to the foldable. Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2012

8 th Grade Science Weather Stations Go to each of the stations and complete the assignments. Station 1: Temperature and Pressure Station 2: Fronts and Pressure Station 3: Jet Stream Station 4: Frontal Movement Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2012

8 th Grade Science Exit Ticket Examine the map below. On page __ in your INB, make a prediction about what the weather will be in Austin and in ___________ on Friday. Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2012
