8 Math…  Math 8-11 is required to graduate  There are 3 streams of Math: 1) Foundations and PreCalculus 10 → PreCalculus 11 → PreCalc 12 → optional APCalc12 o This math is optimal for those who will pursue the Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, or Business at the post secondary level. o All universities accept Pre-Calc 11 for general admission (Arts, Humanities, Social Science) o Certain programs require Pre-Calc 12 for admission SLSS Program Planning 2016 - 2017

9 Math 2) Apprentice & Workplace 10 → Apprentice & Workplace 11  This Math is optimal for those wishing to go into the workforce or a skilled trade (carpentry, plumbing, hair design, cooking, auto mechanics, welding etc…)  BCIT and other trades programs accept A&W 11 for general admission SLSS Program Planning 2016 - 2017

10 Math 3) Foundations and PreCalculus 10 → Foundations 11 → optional Foundations 12  This math is optimal for those who are going to pursue fine arts, social sciences or humanities at the post secondary level (ie: History, Criminology, Music, Literature, Art)  SFU and UVic accept Math Foundations 11 for Arts admission  UBC requires both Math Foundations 11 & 12 for Arts admission SLSS Program Planning 2016 - 2017

11 Language  You do NOT need a language 11 to graduate  But most universities require a Language 11 for admission (new: NOT UVic)  Options for completing: Take the course Transfer Standing: if you completed up to grade 7 in another language, no % Challenge Exam: get a % but UBC won’t use to calculate your acceptance average SLSS Program Planning 2016 - 2017

12 Post Secondary  Most universities in BC require that you take English 12 and 3 other approved grade 12 classes. Some Ontario universities want you to have 4 other approved classes.  Examples of approved courses: Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Physics 12, Geology 12, Economics 12, Geography 12, History 12, Law 12, Mandarin 12, French 12, PreCalculus 12, Spanish 12, Any AP course SLSS Program Planning 2016 - 2017

13 Post Secondary Streams  Most universities offer programs through faculties (Arts, Science, Business)  Important that students understand prereqs for each faculty  Students should meet with Mrs. Kerr (CIA) in Grade 11  Mrs. Kerr will be presenting a workshop in March for students about how to apply SLSS Program Planning 2016 - 2017

14 Post Secondary Continued  Many post secondary schools now have a supplemental, ie: UBC’s Personal Profile  Make sure you get involved! Universities want to see that you are well-rounded  Join clubs, sports and get involved in your community SLSS Program Planning 2016 - 2017

15 Considering UBC?  Science Requirements: Phys 11, Chem 11, Eng 12, PreCalc 12 and two approved grade 12 courses, some programs require Biology 11 so check the website.  Arts: English 12, 3 other approved grade 12 courses. 17 Important Deadlines  Complete your course selection sheets and hand them into counsellor’s office by MARCH 4  Course verification forms will be handed out in early April  You may make changes up until April 30  Timetable sent home in June  Course changes can be made in August and September (first week) SLSS Program Planning 2016 - 2017
