Chapter 6 Lesson 3 Virginia was the first permanent English Colony. It was the largest and wealthiest Southern Colony. It had the first elected government.

Virginia People of Virginia: 1.Most came looking for gold. 2.They didn’t find gold, but many stayed and started plantations thanks to the rich soil and tidewater. 3.A plantation is a large farm on which crops are raised by workers who live on the farm. 4.Most workers were indentured servants or enslaved Africans.

Virginia Government In 1619, colonists created the first elected legislature in the colonies. A legislature is a group of people with the power to make and change laws. The legislature was called the House of Burgesses & most members were members of the Church of England. Representatives in the Virginia Legislature were called burgesses. Unlike the Middle Colonies, Puritans, Quakers, and others who were not Anglican had to leave the colony.

Maryland Maryland began in 1632 when King Charles I of England gave land in North America to Cecilius Calvert, also known as Lord Baltimore. Lord Baltimore was Catholic and hoped to make Maryland a refuge for Catholics. A refuge is a safe place. Cultural Regions

The Carolinas Charles II started a colony in the Carolinas. It had good farmland. Planters built rice plantations in the tidewater.

Georgia England’s King George II gave Georgia to James Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe wanted Georgia to be a place for poor people and debtors. A debtor is a person who owes money. Georgia colonists could not drink alcohol, own slaves, or elect their own legislature. They did not like these rules and later changed them. Georgia quickly became a wealthy plantation colony like South Carolina.
