3 Two fundamental principles @ work: –Pleasure Principle = do whatever feels good –Reality Principle = repress these feelings so one can do what needs to be done. Desires that can’t be fulfilled are repressed into the mind = UNCONCIOUS

4 Unconcious Inaccessible to the conscious mind – you can’t know what’s in your unconscious just by thinking about it. 3 indirect routes to the unconscious: 1.Dreams 2.Freudian slips 3.Jokes -- Whatever route taken, almost always about sex
