3 The “Unconscious” Mind

4 The “Id”: Unconscious/Instinctual  Disorganized part of one’s personality:  Basic drives Selfish Seeks instant gratification  Driven by the “pleasure principle”:  Seeks immediate satisfaction if unchecked by reality/consequence

5 The “Ego”: Conscious/Executive  Acts according to the “reality principle”  Cannot slake the desires of the “id” directly Societal consequence Basic reality/order  Works with “id” to fulfill wants/desires rationally  Seeks to avoid future grief and still supply “id”

6 The “Superego”: Higher Order  Aim’s for perfection:  Seeks to obtain the ideals of the “ego” Spiritual center Conscience (little voice)  Directly opposes the “id” instead supplying it  Makes us socially acceptable  Sense of right and wrong comes from this
