Human Impact As the human population grows larger and larger, what effect are we having on the natural world? (The Earth)?
2
Human Impact What do we already know about…. habitat destruction declining wildlife erosion desertification deforestation water pollution

Ozone depletion (CFCs) NASA projections of stratospheric ozone concentrations if chlorofluorocarbons had not been banned. Ozone protects earth from UV rays. CFC attach to ozone and take out chunks, allowing for less protection

Line plot of global mean land-ocean temperature index, 1880 to present, with the base period 1951-1980. The dotted black line is the annual mean and the solid red line is the five-year mean. The green bars show uncertainty. Layer of CO2 traps sun’s heat onto Earth, causing temperatures to rise

QUICK BRAINSTORM & SHARE-OUT 1.Why do you think people think it is okay to litter or pollute the environment? 2. Where does pollution go?
6
Pollution The process of making land, water, air or other parts of the environment dirty + unsafe or unsuitable to use Unfortunately, animals and other living organisms are often harmed due to pollution… https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U_6QlABQuxw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U_6QlABQuxw Turtle https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d2J2qdOrW44https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d2J2qdOrW44 Cow
7
Deforestation Deforestation leads to: Loss of habitat Loss of biodiversity (diversity of living things) Loss of organisms that produce oxygen (02) and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) http://earthenginepartners.appspot.com/science-2013-global-foresthttp://earthenginepartners.appspot.com/science-2013-global-forest)
8
Acid Rain Burning of fossil fuels nitrates + sulfates into the air mix with water vapor and form nitric + sulfuric acid (acid rain) Consequences: Damage to plants, soil, and aquatic systems Chemically erodes statues, bridges, buildings
9
Herbicides & Pesticides Chemicals used to control pests We spray herbicides and pesticides without knowing the possible long term consequences. (Examples PCB & DDT)
10
Pesticides like PCB & DDT Can build up in the environment causing Biological Magnification Chemicals magnify (become more concentrated) as they go up the food chain, and become lethal in top predators
11
We Do: Advocacy Using your environmental issue advocate and educ ate the public about: Your whiteboard should include: the name/definition of the issue ( Ozone depletion (CFCs ); Burning of fossil fuels; Global warming; Pollution (air, wa ter, soil); Deforestation; Acid rain; Pesticides & herbicide u sage; Biomagnification ) the cause/ of the issue and consequences what people can do to help Drawings or diagrams of some sort Graph/tablems.zbc.science@gmail.com

Home Learning Due October 2: 1.Calculate your carbon footprint www.nature.org/greenliving/carboncalculatorwww.nature.org/greenliving/carboncalculator 2. Write a 1 paragraph reflection on your carbon footprint. 3. Come up with a list of 10 things you can do every day to reduce your carbon footprint.

So, a lot is going wrong… I s anyone in the world doing a nything to make the e nvironment better?
