Dystopian &Utopian Literature Uglies by Scott Westerfeld By Emily Henry

Utopia- An imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. The word utopia was first used by by Sir Thomas More in 1516. Utopia in Greek means “no place” and also resembles the word used for good place which is “eutopia” Dystopia-An imagine place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad. Usually dystopia literature or films are used as a warning against something happening in society today.

Introduction to the book Uglies takes place in the future where humans now live in small cities that they are not allowed to leave. Cities are split into sections within themselves and people live according to their age. When people reach the age of 16 they undergo surgery the transform themselves from normal to extremely beautiful.

Impact When the book first tells you about the operation that people undergo when they turn 16 you don’t quite understand the full impact of the operation, but later on in the book you find out that during the operation when you change from “ugly” to “pretty” they are altering the way people react to different situations. This probably had the biggest impact on me because at this stage in the book you are unsure about whether or not this is a version of utopia or dystopia, but when you find out this information it makes you realise that they are in fact altering peoples personalities to suit their version of utopia.

Why was this noel written? I think that this novel was written to help people realise that looks aren’t everything and people need to focus on being good people. I also think that this novel could have been written as a warning about war. As the author has set this book in the future where people are confined to their cities not allowed to venture out into the outside world. It ended this way because people ended going to war other small issues and they eventually ended up destroying civilization that was free to do what that wanted too.

How successful is this novel? I think that this novel was successful in getting that message that it wants over to the reader but need to shorten the way it does this as most of the story is stretched out for as long as possible
