Photography Composition using the Element of Shape
3
Shape/Form Can be GEOMETRIC (man-made) Can be ORGANIC (natural) Shapes are 2-Dimensional and flat. (circle) Forms are 3-Dimensional with height, width and depth. (sphere)
4
Shape/Form The second most fundamental element of design is shape, because shape is the principal element of identification. For that shape to be successfully identifiable, it needs to be in strong contrast with its surroundings so that it is detached from the clutter around it.
5
Silhouette Silhouette is the purest and strongest of all shape, it in an image is that it is best defined when the subject is frontlit or backlit. Shapes in images can also be seen as silhouettes – these are best shot several minutes before sunset/sunrise up to several minutes following it
6
Triangles Another rule is the "Golden Triangles". Photos with diagonal lines, There are three triangles with corresponding shapes.
7
Triangles And one more rule is a "Golden Spiral" " There should be something, leading the eye to the center of the composition. It could be a line or several subjects.
8
Triangles and People If your subject is already triangular or diamond- shaped (like a pyramid), the viewer’s eye will automatically focus on that shape.
9
Triangles and Subject If your subject is already triangular or diamond- shaped (like a pyramid), the viewer’s eye will automatically focus on that shape.
10
Triangles and Space Some shapes are more effective than others in providing an interesting frame for your photo. The shapes that work best for composition are triangles and diamonds.
11
Pattern Creating your pictures around repeating elements or patterns provides picture unity and structure. Pattern repetition creates rhythm that the eyes enjoy following
12
Pattern When pattern is used as a supporting element, it must be used carefully. Pictures that are purely pattern are seldom used, because they tend to be monotonous. Patterns should be used to strengthen and add interest to your subject.
