Idealism – making policy to achieve very lofty goals that may not be achievable or in one’s self interest, but are based on a set of values that the policy-maker believes will make the world a better place Realism – making policy to achieve goals that are possible and are in one’s self- interest

Kennedy’s Inaugural Address Man has unalienable rights – US won’t allow abuse of rights in US or abroad Maintain alliances Will oppose takeovers or infiltration into SA Must protect liberty with force if necessary Negotiate with USSR for reducing nukes Promote the UN Help the poor throughout the world Promote Peace but stay militarily strong Prevent new colonization or expansion of tyranny Create Alliance for Progress w/ South America Promote science and invention – go to moon Work with USSR to follow international law Rid the world of poverty disease and war

Kennedy’s Administration Elected with small margin – had to be ride the fence b/t liberal and conservative Non-committal on civil rights Idealistic but very much a cold warrior Challenged the nation to be better at home and abroad Took up civil rights after mid-term election and experience, especially after Cuban Missile Crisis.
