Comparing and Ordering Integers
Welcome to Math 6 Comparing and Ordering Integers
2
Sir Ernest Shackleton
3
Connector: When you first learned about numbers and later decimals and fractions, you were taught the correct way to compare and order them. Today we will discuss what it means to compare and order integers.
4
Key vocabulary for this lesson
Integers- are the set of all whole numbers and their opposites. Positive Integers- are greater than 0. Negative Integers- are less than 0.
5
Absolute Value means how far a number is from zero.
That’s why -7 and 7 have the same absolute value.
6
Objective: Each student will: Compare integers Order integers Identify 3 real-life applications of integers
7
The further to the left you go, the smaller the number.
The further to the right you go, the larger the number.

The lowest reliably measured temperature on Earth of −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) was in Antarctica on 21 July 1983 at Vostok Station. The highest temperature ever recorded in Antarctica was 14.6°C (58.3°F) in two places, Hope Bay and Vanda Station, on 5 January 1974.
13
The mean annual temperature of the interior is −57°C (−70°F).
The coast is warmer. Monthly means at McMurdo Station range from −28°C (−18.4°F) in August to −3°C (26.6°F) in January.

At the South Pole, the highest temperature ever recorded was −12
At the South Pole, the highest temperature ever recorded was −12.3°C (9.9°F) on 25 December 2011. Along the Antarctic Peninsula, temperatures as high as 15°C (59°F) have been recorded, though the summer temperature is usually around 2°C (36°F).
16
Severe low temperatures vary with latitude, elevation, and distance from the ocean.
East Antarctica is colder than West Antarctica because of its higher elevation. The Antarctic Peninsula has the most moderate climate. Higher temperatures occur in January along the coast and average slightly below freezing.
18
Order the highest temperatures
from greatest to least.
19
CONCLUSION Integers are not made up numbers. They are numbers from real life. Just ask Ernest Shackleton, who was stranded for more than a year in Antarctica.
