2 Letters & Sounds’ Principles and Practise of High Quality Phonics  Everything starts with reading....  ‘Being able to read is the most important skills children will learn during their early schooling and has far reaching implications for lifelong confidence and well-being’

4 The Rose Review  The independent review of early reading, conducted by Jim Rose, confirmed that ‘high quality phonic work’ should be the prime means for teaching beginner readers to learn to read (and spell)  The review also highlighted the importance of developing from the earliest stages, children’s speaking and listening skills – ensuring that beginner readers are ready to get off to a good start in phonic work.

5 Speech Sounds  Although there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, there are more than 40 speech sounds.  Letters are taught in phases. Phase 1 is all about ‘listening’. Phase 2 begins teaching letter sounds (phonemes). Phase 3 begins introducing graphemes. Phase 4 and 5 consolidation of sounds learnt and applying into reading and writing.

6 Technical Terms  Phoneme – The smallest unit of sound in a word.  Graphmeme and Digraph – two letters which make one sound:– What we write to represent a sound/ phoneme. For some phonemes this could be more than one letter:  Example – ai igh ch

7 Blending and Segmenting  Blending is the joining up of individual sounds to make the whole word.  Example: s-i-t = sit  Segementing is the breaking down of sounds from the whole word.  Example: cot = c-o-t
