3. Utility Software A program that assists in the maintenance and monitoring of the computer system, that are sometimes included within the operating system itself: Printer monitoring software Virus checkers & firewalls File compression software Disk Defragmenters Encryption utilities

5. Presentations Get into groups of 3 You are to devise a presentation to the class which will explain the different types of software utility programs available You need to explain their functions and examine the reasons why they are useful.

7. B ack-up utility. All files on a computer system need to be protected from being damaged. This is a simple routine which copies the contents of files to some other location so that if the original is damaged there is a replacement copy available.

8. Anti-virus utility Computers can contract a virus, which is a small program which can reproduce itself and ultimately take over spaces in memory thereby erasing data and programs. A piece of anti-virus software is a utility program which is continually looking out for the characteristics of a virus and which deletes any that it finds.

9. File handling utility There are programs to store and retrieve the files in the first place. Then there are programs which allow files to be altered, or even deleted completely. Sometimes the contents of two files need to be combined, this is known as a merge. Finally, the contents of a file may need to be put into some sort of order, sorting.

10. Data transfer programs. These are utilities that are written to control the movement of data from one piece of hardware to another. An example would be sending data from the processor to the printer for printing out or data from the processor to a scanner.
