1 The Husband and Wife Relationship
(Gen. 2:18-24; Matt. 19:1-19)

2 The Husband and Wife Relationship
And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." Gen 2:18 (NKJV) And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." Gen 2:23 (NKJV) Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Gen 2:24 (NKJV) The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. Prov 31:11 (NKJV)

3 Characteristics of the Relationship
And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Gen 2:18-21 (NKJV)

11 Characteristics of the Relationship
It is to be a personal relationship Genesis 2:18-24; 1 Corinthians 7:2 It is to be an intimate relationship Genesis 1:27-28, 2:18, 24; Matthew 19:5; Hebrews 13:4; 1 Corinthians 7:2-5 It is to be a mutual relationship Genesis 2:20; Ephesians 5:33; 1 Corinthians 13:5 It is to be a permanent relationship Genesis 2:23

12 The Position of Husband (Head)
But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 1 Cor 11:3 (NKJV) Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Eph 5:22-23 (NKJV) one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 1 Tim 3:4-5 (NKJV) Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Peter 3:7 (NKJV)  Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Col 3:19 (NKJV) So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. Eph 5:28 (NKJV)

13 The Position of Wife (Helper)
And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." Gen 2:18 (NKJV)  But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 1 Cor 11:3 (NKJV) Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. Eph 5:22 (NKJV; See also Col 3:18) Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 1 Tim 2:11-12 (NKJV) to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. Titus 2:5 (NKJV) See also 1 Peter 3:1-6

14 The Position of Wife (Helper)
Why submission is required: Man was made 1st (1 Tim. 2:12-13) Woman was deceived in the transgression (1 Tim.2:14) The order and purpose of creation (1 Cor.11:8-9). The woman is strictly taught not to have authority over the man (1 Tim.2:12).

15 A Contrast of Women The worthy woman is happy with her position
The strange woman wants something different Her character: Prov. 31:11 Her value: Prov. 31:10a Her willingness to work: Prov. 31:13-15 Her economy: Prov. 31:16 Her benevolence: Prov. 31:20 Her unselfishness: Prov. 31:21 Her encouragement to her husband: Prov. 31:23 Her wisdom: Prov. 31:26a Her kind of disposition: Prov. 31: 26b Her ability to discipline: Prov. 31:27a Her character: Prov. 7:11a Her value: Prov. 7:10b, 27 Her wastefulness: Prov. 7:16-18 Her attire: Prov. 7:10b Her ungodliness: Prov. 7:14, 18b Her deceitfulness: Prov. 7:10c Her disrespect for her husband: Prov. 7:19 Her wisdom: Prov. 7:21 Her disposition: Prov. 7:26 Her instability: Prov. 7:11-12

16 The Husband and Wife Relationship
The husband and wife relationship was established by God. The relationship of marriage is suggested by two words: “HEAD” and “HELP” Good relationships do not just happen… They come as a result of understanding what the relationship is all about, and having the willingness to sacrifice (and work) to make the relationship good.
