Old Netherlands and New Netherlands 17 th – Netherlands revolted against Spain- gained independence 1609- Henry Hudson- sailed into Delaware and New York Bay Claimed area for the Netherlands Dutch bought Manhattan ( 22,000 acres) for trinkets Dutch gave PATROONSHIPS- large areas of land to agreed to settle at least 50 people on land

New Amsterdam was a diverse area - All races and all types of people - Indians, New England and Swedes in New Sweden ( along Delaware) gave New Netherlands tough time - Leader? PETER STUYVESANT – despotic and intolerant - Believed he got his power from God

British King Charles II gave brother ( Duke of York) area now New York. British troops invaded ( 1664) and quickly defeated the Dutch. New Amsterdam was re-named New York

Dutch Legacy Name Wall Street ( named for wall built by Dutch in southern Manhattan) Dutch names- Harlem, Brooklyn Architecture Santa Claus, Easter eggs, waffles, sleighing, golf

Pennsylvania William Penn- wealthy Englishman- was a Quaker 1681- received a grant of land from the king Called Pennsylvania- in honor of Penn- who wanted land called Sylvania Best advertised colony

Penn bought land from Indians -- chief Tammany --Indians were treated well

Freedom of worship for all ( except for Jews and Catholics) Death penalty was only for treason and murder No restrictions on immigration Growing dislike for slavery Philadelphia- was carefully planned

Pennsylvania- attracted a wide variety of people By 1700- only Virginia was more populous and richer ( Penn was not liked bc of friendliness to James II … was jailed at times… )

Middle Way of Middle Colonies New York- New Jersey- Delaware- Pennsylvania All had fertile soil and expanse of land All ( except D) exported grain Middle colonies- middle way between New England- Southern Colonies Landholdings – intermediate in size Economic and social democracy More ethnically diverse than other colonies
