4 ORWELL’S WRITING STYLE Politically opinionated Keys to Orwell’s writing –Never use a metaphor, simile or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.metaphorsimile –Never use a long word where a short one will do. –If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. –Never use the passive where you can use the active.passiveactive –Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. –Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

5 Allegory –a story that represents a deeper or hidden meaning. One story takes place on the surface. Under the surface the story’s characters and events represent abstract ideas or states of being, things like love or freedom, evil or goodness, hell or heaven. An allegory must operate on two levels. –Storytelling – the characters must be believable and the story must keep the reader interested. –Allegorically—the deeper meaning must be available and strike your attention See if you find that Orwell’s story of the Russian Revolution hooks you on both levels. ALLEGORY-A STORY BEHIND A STORY

6 Orwell’s fictional Animal Farm is likely based on the Russian Revolution of 1917, which led to the rise of the Soviet Union, resulting in the fall of the Russian Empire. Orwell believed “in a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” George Orwell uses farm animals to showcase Stalin’s role, and other prominent figure’s role during this time. In this story a group of farm animals overthrow their master to receive better treatment and opportunities, only to become the thing they were avoiding. RUSSIAN REVOLUTION: BACKGROUND

7 SUMMARY Two revolutions: –Members of parliament overthrew government –Bolshevik Party forces takes over the government.
