2. Alien & Sedition Acts What were the Alien & Sedition Acts? Why were they necessary? Which president included this as a part of his foreign policy? – A series of 4 laws, passed during the presidency of John Adams in 1798, that sought to restrict the public activities of political radicals who sympathized with the French Revolution and criticized Adams's Federalist policies.

3. Colonial Grievances Bill of Rights What colonial grievance was resolved by the 2 nd amendment? What group of people would have argued for this to be added to the Constitution? – “He has kept among us in times of peace standing armies without the consent of our legislatures” – Anti-Federalists would have argued this to be added because they were proponents (for) the Bill of Rights, which was to protect the people from the government.

11. War of 1812 When and where did Francis Scott Key write the “Star Spangled Banner”, and what was happening in the United States at that time? What was the reason for writing such an impactful poem? – Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer, who had gone to negotiate the release for his friend on a British prison ship in Sept. 1814 near Baltimore, MD. – Key and his friend were not allowed to leave the ship until after the fighting was over. – Key was inspired to write the poem “Defense at Ft. McHenry” which would later be renamed the “Star- Spangled Banner”, after seeing the American flag still flying in the morning after the battle.

War of 1812 What was the effect of the British Naval Blockade during the War of 1812? – After the American Revolution, America is still catching up with Europe in matters of manufacturing. – United States trades heavily with Europe importing goods. – During the War of 1812 the British Navy blocks European trade ships from bringing goods into the United States, America begins to produce what the country needs instead of importing things from Europe. Increase in American manufacturing = decrease European imports.

English Colonization What was the reason for England’s first attempt to colonize North America? – 1 st attempt at English colonization in North America was on Roanoke Island (present day North Carolina) 1585. – Queen Elizabeth I granted Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Humphry Gilbert a charter to create a permanent English settlement in the New World.
