Studying: What Works, What Doesn’t by Jamie Durham Counselor

Study with a partner. You increase your chances of remembering the material. Any questions you or your partner may have can be cleared up through research and discussion. You will see and hear the material.

Get plenty of sleep. Your mind needs time to rest and process new information. You can recall information quicker when you are rested. New information is easier to learn when you have had consistently the same amount of deep sleep. “Catching up” on sleep by sleeping late on the weekends keeps your sleep patterns “off.”

Whose job is it? Teachers cover and explain concepts. You are expected to learn and remember what was covered. You didn’t understand the lesson? –Research. –Read other books about it. –Meet with a study group to clear up any misunderstandings.

Mitosis Find videos on Youtube like this one:

Always eat the live toad first If you do not allow yourself to _________ until after you are ready for the test, you are less likely to procrastinate. Enjoying your evening with studying behind you instead of still “to do” will give you a sense of accomplishment.

Flash cards can be ineffective, unless… Make a matching game with cards. –Write words on one card in red marker. –Write definitions on another card in a different color. –Line up all cards with words. –Mix up the definitions. –Place them next to word over and over until you can get them all correct every time.

Flash Cards, continued Carry the most difficult terms with you at all times. Take them out and practice while you are waiting. –Doctor’s office –Class to begin –During commercials

Tips from real people Rewrite your notes. Read and reread your notes aloud. Record the information and listen to it while you ride in the car. For math/chemistry/physics, rework homework problems. Highlight information in your notes if you hear the instructor repeat it.

More tips from real people: Do all homework whether you have to turn it in or not. Go over your previous tests with the instructor so you can learn from your mistakes. Never miss class. Read the chapter BEFORE it is covered in class.

Most important tips: Quit saying “I can’t.” Time is a created thing. To say, “I don’t have time,” is to say, “I don’t want to.”
