Why does China have such a high birth rate? Come up with as many answers as possible.

World population By the end of the lesson you will; 1)Be able to define a range of different population key words 2)Be able to describe the key characteristics of a range of countries around the world 3)Be able to explain the key changes that happen in the DTM 4)Have applied your new knowledge to an exam question

Homework Produce an Electronic poster/ Movie/ Podcast to summarise the country that you have been given to research This will then be marked and shared with the rest of the class. Add in Figures Add in the key words that you have learnt this lesson Link the different statistics together Work in the groups given to you in the lesson This will serve as great revision for the exams so do it really well. DUE NEXT LESSON (FRIDAY)

World population; Task 1 For each of the questions write down the answers clearly Order yourself in your predictions 1.What is the exact world population 2.How many births have there been today? 3.How many deaths have there been? 4.How much has the population of the world grown by? Task 2 Order the following populations – Predict their populations USA Ethiopia Nigeria Russia Bangladesh India Brazil Pakistan China India Mexico Japan Russia Philippines

Population Key words Key WordDefinition Birth rateThe number of deaths each year. Expressed as rate per 1000 of the population (Number of deaths / population) * 1000 Death RateThe time that it takes for a population to double [70 / percentage change ] e.g. 2% change = 70/ 2 = 35 year doubling time! Rate of Natural Increase The number of births in a year. It is represented as rate / 1000 of the population (Number of Births / population) * 1000 Doubling timeThe number of deaths in the population under 1. expressed as deaths / 1000 live births. (deaths of infants / live births *1000) Replacement levelThe number of people that the population increases or decreases per year. Expressed as rate per 1000 of the population (death rate – birth rate = rate /1000 of the population. It can be expressed as a percentage Infant mortality rateThe average number of children that a woman is expected to have in her lifetime Dependency RatioProportion of the the population who do not work (under 16 and over 65) Expressed as percentage [ percentage of total population under 16 and 64+ THEN percentage of those in work.Workers / non workers *100 Fertility rateThe number of children that are needed by each couple to keep the population level (generally 2.1 to allow for deaths later on) Death Rate Doubling time Birth rate Infant Mortality rate Rate of natural increase Fertility rate Dependency ratio Replacement level

What is natural Increase? How do you measure the fertility rate? By the end of the lesson you will; 1)Be able to define a range of different population key words 2)Be able to describe the key characteristics of a range of countries around the world 3)Be able to explain the key changes that happen in the DTM 4)Have applied your new knowledge to an exam question

Demographic Transition model Task Watch the following video on the DTMfollowing video on the DTM Add in notes to help you explain each of the different sections

DTM Stage 1; 1.Subsistence farming 2.Lack of facilities – water sanitation 3.High infant mortality rates 4.Low life expectancy 5.High birth rates Stage 2 Economic development begins Increasing wealth Better sanitation Death rate start to fall BR remains high = high natural increase High levels of Child labor IMR high Stage 3; Birth and fertility rates remain high (allows for higher QOL /SOL) Urbanisation = smaller families Child labor laws = less children Lower fertility rate More education for children Stage 4 / 5 4. BR and DR similar levels = stable population 5. BR less than DR = population decrease Ageing populations Immigration encouraged Life expectancy increases / Fertility drops

What are the key characteristics of stage 2? By the end of the lesson you will; 1)Be able to define a range of different population key words 2)Be able to describe the key characteristics of a range of countries around the world 3)Be able to explain the key changes that happen in the DTM 4)Have applied your new knowledge to an exam question

Country Case studies Task You are each going to be given a country to study You should choose the key characteristics from the data What stage of the DTM are they? Be ready to present your information to the class Explain how each factor will have an impact on; 1)Birth rate 2)Death Rate 3)Natural Increase / Decrease 4)Life expectancy 5)Fertility rates 6)Doubling time Countries Botswana The Gambia India Japan USE Top Tip For success; Be confident using Geographical language Refer the different statistics Link statistics together

Why does the Gambia have a high BR? By the end of the lesson you will; 1)Be able to define a range of different population key words 2)Be able to describe the key characteristics of a range of countries around the world 3)Be able to explain the key changes that happen in the DTM 4)Have applied your new knowledge to an exam question

CriteriaAchieved? Named each of the different stages Drawn a diagram to help explain Given a named example of a country in each stage Added in at least 7 figures Described the trends for each stage (BR / DR / NI) Explained why there are these trends Used the terminology learnt this lesson (Key words) – At least 5 times. Exam Practice Describe the key characteristics of the demographic transition model using examples where ever possible What do you think needs to be included in your answer?

Peer assessment Task Use the peer assessment grid to help mark the work Each time they achieve a section you need to underline it and write what they have achieved in the margins. Write down a WWW / EBI CriteriaAchieved? Named each of the different stages Drawn a diagram to help explain Given a named example of a country in each stage Added in at least 7 figures Described the trends for each stage (BR / DR / NI) Explained why there are these trends Used the terminology learnt this lesson (Key words) – At least 5 times.

What do you need to improve on? By the end of the lesson you will; 1)Be able to define a range of different population key words 2)Be able to describe the key characteristics of a range of countries around the world 3)Be able to explain the key changes that happen in the DTM 4)Have applied your new knowledge to an exam question

What have you learnt?
