In Summer a population of 2000 to 3000 people live on forty bases spread around the continent and surrounding islands. In winter the population drops to 500 when the scientists go home.

Antarctica is our last continental wilderness. Its extreme climate and isolation have created a wonder land of great significance. It has a major influence on the worlds weather systems and climate to the Southern Hemisphere.
