What do these images have in common? They are all used to influence you to do something. They are all examples of propaganda!

Propaganda WHAT? A message used to persuade you to believe something or do something WHO? Corporations Government Individuals HOW? There are 7 propaganda techniques we will learn from the PPT, but there are many more out there! WHERE? Commercials Packaging Speeches Stores Billboards Internet Newspapers Everywhere! WHY? To persuade you to buy something, think something, or do something.

The 1 st type of Propaganda is… Persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it. All the cool kids are doing it Everybody has one!

Bandwagon works because it makes you think “everyone is doing it” and you should too. Why is this sign considered BANDWAGON?

The 2 nd type of Propaganda is… Love Hate Using words that will make people feel strongly about someone or something.

Loaded words work because they make you feel a certain way. What words are used in these ads that make us feel a certain way?

The 3 rd type of Propaganda is… Using words and images of a famous person or an expert to persuade.

Testimonials work because you feel like you can trust the words of an expert or someone famous.

The 4th type of Propaganda is… Using images to bring up strong feelings or emotions in order to persuade.

Transfer works because you transfer the happy feelings you associate with a picture to happy feelings about a person or product. (This can also work with bad feelings) What emotion is being transferred in this ad?

The 5th type of Propaganda is… Using repeated messages or pictures to persuade. SUNDAY!

Repetition works because you remember things better when you’ve seen or heard it more than once. If you drove by these repeating signs, why would you be interested?

The 6th type of Propaganda is… Links a person, idea, or product to a negative symbol.

Name-calling works because if we believe the competition is bad, we can assume this product will be the best choice. Why do you think we see this technique used so often in politics?

The 7th type of Propaganda is… Plays on our deep-seated fears and warns the audience that disaster will strike if we do not follow the instructions.

Practice ◦ On the handout you have, with a partner, read the paragraphs on the other Propaganda techniques. Take note of the ones that were not mentioned on the Power Point, we will discuss them. ◦ 4 minutes! ◦ Now complete the bottom portion of your handout.

Objective ◦ SWBAT Develop a well written essay comparing and contrasting key characteristics of Snowball and Napoleon.

Preparation… ◦ In your groups, take 3 minutes to discuss and take notes on the similarities and differences between Snowball and Napoleon. What were their leadership styles like? Which figures in the Russian Revolution do they represent? Who was more successful?

Assignment ◦ In 40 minutes write an essay answering the following prompt: Compare and Contrast Snowball and Napoleon. What techniques do they use in their struggle for power. Who presents themselves as a better leader? CW Grade: 10 points ◦ Things to Remember: ◦ Essay format (Thesis, at least 4-5 paragraphs, etc.) ◦ Cite evidence ◦ Write in 3 rd person and Legibly!
