Acid Rain Islam Hamdan May 2nd 2012 9g1
Acid rain, do you know how its formed, and how it affects us?
2
When does acid rain occur?
Acid rain occurs when sulfur and nitrogen compounds (that are made from fossil fuels) combine with the moisture in the atmosphere.
3
How does acid rain affect the plants and trees?
Acid rain affects the plants and trees because it has a low pH level, and because of the low pH level the rain is more acidic than regular rain.
4
How acidic is the acid rain?
Well, it depends on how much pollution is in the air. If the air is very polluted it is as acidic as lemon juice. For example, if acidic rain or snow touch the plants, it will almost kill the plant and make its function on the planet not work correctly.
5
How does acid rain affect the lakes and streams?
Acid rain affects the lakes and streams; because of the low pH level it affects the algae, the fish eggs, and some other organisms.
6
What makes acid rain so dangerous when it goes inside lakes?
What makes it so dangerous is that it kills the algae inside the lakes, which makes the lakes crystal clear. Yes it may be a pretty to see, but it affects the food chains and ecosystems.
7
What makes acid rain occur?
Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds.
8
How does acid rain hurt our environment?
Acid rain hurts our environment by killing the trees, and affects the lakes and streams.
9
What can we do to reduce the air pollution that causes acid rain?
Well, in the 1990’s there was a nationwide approach in reducing air pollution. The law stated that to improve public health, we have to remove so2 and nitrogen oxides. The solution was to put a cap on how much so2 that was being let out. From then to 2005, the so2 was reduced by 7 million tons from the power plants, or 41% below 1980 levels.

Reflections One last thing is that did you know that acid rain has been linked to breathing and lung problems in children, and people who have asthma. So now, I think we all now how acid rain is formed and how it affects us all.
