CLOSE READING: RIIS’S PHOTOS Do you think these photographs are trustworthy accounts of what life was like in American cities during the Industrial era? Why or why not? Does the fact that these photographs are posed take away some of their credibility about how poor, urban Americans lived? What do you think Riis wanted to communicate to his audience? What might these photographs tell you about the middle and upper class Americans who bought Riis’s books and attended his lectures? What did his audience believe about photographs?

IT’S ALMOST TIME TO READ! WOO HOO! Before we do, let’s talk about paraphrasing and summarizing. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from text into your own words. Paraphrases are usually short than the original passage, taking a somewhat broader segment of the text and condensing it slightly. Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) of the entire text into your own words, including only the main point(s). Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and take a broad overview of the text.
6
NOW LET’S READ! Send someone from your table group to pick up chapter thirteen of How the Other Half Lives. Let’s annotate!
7
IN YOUR TABLE GROUPS 1. Annotate the remaining paragraphs in the text. Use a dictionary if you need it. 2. Using your assigned paragraph number, work together to paraphrase. Be sure to make connections to what you already know Look for any literary devices being used Be ready to share Work TOGETHER

LET’S PONDER What are Riis’s attitudes towards poverty? What does this say about his audience? What were there values and beliefs. What do these photographs and the chapter tell you about life in the cities at the turn of the century?
