2 Imperialism Imperialism – the economic and political domination of a strong nation over other weaker nations Why Imperialize? 1. Economic Raw materials, new markets, investment opportunities

3 Why Imperialize? 2. Political/Military Strategic military bases, expanding borders, land = power!!! 3. Humanitarian Health care, education 4. Religious Spread Christianity

4 Why are they able to imperialize? They were industrialized nations!!! Strong economy due to factories Well organized governments Strong armies & navies Better technology Better medical knowledge

5 Types of Imperialism 1. Colony – most strict form of imperialism. The “mother country” completely takes over the political, economic, & cultural systems of the affected country. Used when a valuable resource is present & when rebellion is possible

6 Types of Imperialism Protectorate – Less severe than a colony. Local rulers & systems are usually left in place but those in charge must answer to the “mother country.” (puppet governments) Used when less valuable resources are present & rebellion is less likely

7 Types of Imperialism Sphere of Influence – Least restrictive form of imperialism. Here the “mother country” is virtually invisible and may only have a bit of influence through exclusive trading rights or other such advantages. Used to enjoy certain trading rights or other advantages, no threat of rebellion.

8 Are Americans Superior? Social Darwinism supported imperialism Survival of the fittest  successful nations Anglo-Saxonism (John Fiske) – the idea that English-speaking nations… Had superior character, ideas, and systems of government Were destined to dominate the planet Imperialism b/c a part of Manifest Destiny

9 Perry Opens Japan The Japanese practiced strict isolationism 1853: U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry commands 4 warships that sail to Japan Japanese had never seen steamships and were impressed by American technology and firepower They realized they could not compete against Western technology and weapons They opened 2 ports Trading makes them stronger

10 Japan Westernizes W/i 30 years Japan industrialized and westernized their country Adopt western technology, have their own industrial revolution, develop a modern military Japan will now b/g to build their own Asian empire They will b/c imperialistic

11 The US Takes Over Hawaii b/c a territory – US wanted military bases in the Pacific and Hawaii was in an economic crisis US diplomacy with Latin America Pan-Americanism – idea that the US and Latin America should work together US wants Europe to know that we are the dominate power in the region

12 Building a Modern Navy It was feared that if the US did not build up its navy and acquire bases overseas, it would be shut out of foreign markets Influences on Congress to construct a new navy Business leaders wanted new markets overseas Anglo-Saxonism convinced many Americans that they had a destiny to dominate the world Growing European imperialism threatened America’s security
