© Chevron 2008 ASTM PCEOCP VID Matrix Design and Funding Subgroup April 25, 2008 Teleconference

2 © Chevron 2008 Agenda Review and approve last meeting minutes Review action items Update status Other business Next meeting

3 © Chevron 2008 Membership – open to all PCEOCP members additive suppliers, lube suppliers, OEMs, ind. Labs, ILSAC, ACC, API, PCEOCP and TMC are all represented

4 © Chevron 2008 Meeting and Balloting Follow ASTM rules for conducting the meeting Industry liaisons  PCEOCP-Thom Smith and Glen Mazzamaro  ILSAC – Jim Linden  ACC – Jerry Wang  API – Kevin Ferrick and David Smith  TMC – John Zalar Records posted on the TMC website Generally follow ASTM voting rules but limited to one vote per company Attempt unanimous consensus PCEOCP will have the final vote based on its rules

5 © Chevron 2008 Project Process and Boundary VID Consortium ILSAC/Oil PCEOCP Matrix/Funding Subgroup Final test procedure with demonstrated discrimination MOU (API) Matrix Options Funding options recommendations VID Precision Testing – managed by TMC Scope Inputs outputs GF-5 Timeline Sub Timeline

6 © Chevron 2008 Timeline Timeline is affected by the group’s ability to get key inputs GF-5 timeline Proposed subgroup timeline

7 © Chevron 2008 Scope – Matrix Design The primary goal is to establish VID test precision Repeatability and reproducibility based on fully formulated reference oils representative of current technology such as GF-4 capable or GF-5 prototype The secondary goal is to establish base oil interchange and viscosity grade readacross guidelines The group will continue to monitor Precision Matrix Program until completed

8 © Chevron 2008 Scope - Funding The primary purpose is to recommend minimum funding needs for proposed matrix options to ILSAC/Oil The funding recommendation will include sources and breakdown of funding

9 © Chevron 2008 Key Inputs – Matrix Design Final test procedure and demonstrated discrimination Test procedure, oil and hardware release are being prepared for after May 1 Proveout matrix (demonstrate discrimination) is expected in June and the final report in late June or July number of precision matrix oils Minimum of 3 oils, minimum of 2 future reference oils, minimum of 6 runs on each of the future reference oils suggested requirements: a GF-5 demonstration oil, a GF-4 certification oil, current technology oil(s) that show discrimination (such as a baseline poor reference oil)  VID proveout matrix oils will be fully formulated, GF-4 capable oils  ILSAC will provide a GF-4 certification oil or factory fill oil in two weeks Inquire API BOI/VGRA for oils  Need to know precision matrix oils first For precision matrix only, there needs be only 1 viscosity grade number of participating labs and stands (min. 2 labs and 3 stands) PCEOCP will issue a letter in May and discuss in June ASTM Available: SwRIx2, Intertekx3, Lubrizolx1, Aftonx1, Imperialx1 Engine age effect BOI/VGRA option

10 © Chevron 2008 Precision Matrix – hypothetical design 5 matrix oils maximum, 3 minimum GF-5 demo oil, OEM cert oil, VID non-FM oil, VID vis effect oil, VID FM effect oil May be less if GF-5 and OEM oils can replace some of the VID oils 2 labs and 3 stands minimum, 5 labs and 8 stands currently available IAR, SwRIx2, Imperial, Afton, Lubrizol 2 qualification tests per stand 2 test monitoring reference oils minimum (out of the matrix oils) 6 test per oil minimum Use VID consortium test cost Engine age effect Without adding other testing

11 © Chevron 2008 Key Outputs – Matrix Design Matrix options Precision matrix that addresses  Repeatability and reproducibility  Engine age effect  Calibration recommendation + BOI + VGRA + BOI and VGRA

12 © Chevron 2008 Key Inputs – Funding Minimum number of tests to meet primary goals Number of tests desired to address other goals - list goals and number of tests needed for each individual goal Cost per test from labs including the decision on how many reference runs for stand calibration Number of participating labs and stands Reference oil supplies

13 © Chevron 2008 Key Outputs – Funding Funding estimate for each matrix options Precision only + BOI + VGRA + BOI and VGRA
