Themes of Geography Location – Position on the Earth’s surface – Relative: “Marblehead is East of Salem.” – Absolute: Latitude and Longitude lines Place – Physical and human characteristics – Landforms, climate, soil, animal life, etc. What can you conclude about Marblehead’s “place” based on this image?

Themes of Geography People and Environment – Adaptation of people: changing to fit environment – Adaptation of environment: changing environment to fit needs Hidden cost: pollution, deforestation, etc. Movement – Movement of people, goods and ideas – Trade: movement of goods Imports & exports – Ideas: religion, technology, political, economic, etc. – Interdependence: dependence on goods, resources and knowledge from other parts of the world

Themes of Geography Region – Area with unifying characteristics – Physical: identified by landforms or climate (e.g. Rocky Mts.) – Other: cultural, political or economic regions (e.g. Muslim world) What characteristics (physical, cultural, political, etc.) do you identify with the different regions of the US?
