PLOT & CONFLICT

Plot Plot is the literary element that describes the structure of a story. It shows arrangement of events and actions within a story.

Exposition: the introductory material, which gives the setting, creates the tone, presents the characters, and presents other facts necessary to understanding the story

Rising Action: the series of events that lead to the climax of the story (usually the conflicts or struggles of the main characters)

Climax: the turning point; the most intense moment—either mentally or in action

Falling Action: all of the action which follows the climax

Resolution: the final outcome of the story; conclusion

Plot: Conflict Conflict is the dramatic struggle between two forces in a story. Without conflict, there is no plot.

Plot: Types of Conflict Individual vs. Nature Individual vs. Society Individual vs. SelfIndividual vs. Individual

Plot: Individual vs. Individual Conflict The main character is in conflict with another character, human or not human.

Plot: Individual vs. Nature Conflict The main character is in conflict with the forces of nature, which serve as the adversary or enemy of the main character.

Plot: Individual vs. Society Conflict The main character is in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc.

Plot: Individual vs. Self Conflict The main character experiences some kind of inner conflict.

1. Jim and Mac disagreed about where they should take the dog they found. 2. Carly struggled to walk through the hot, blowing sand. 3. Sarah couldn't decide what to do that night. Should she study or should she go out? 4. In the high winds, the crew was barely able to keep the ship from tilting sideways.

5. Hector thought, "Why did I ever agree to be in this play? I'll never have the nerve to act in front of an audience." 6. After MaryAnne's brother had teased her about being afraid, she had decided to climb the cliff. Now she stood at the foot of the cliff, wishing she could figure out a way to back out. 7. Kim knew that the whole class was angry with her for reminding the teacher about the assignment. At the time, she thought she was doing the right thing. Now she wasn't sure.

8. The snarling dog placed himself between his master and the angry stranger. 9. All the way home, Jeffrey felt angry with himself. "Why couldn't he open his mouth at a party? Why was he always so shy?" 10. Violet wanted her friends to let the new girl join the club, but no one else agreed. Violet felt badly for the new girl, but she didn't know what to do about the problem.
