AC 4.1 - Variability CPWF work in various basins IWMI ARM 2012, Dec. – Inception meetings for AC components of: –Natural and built infrastructure –UTF Bilateral projects / proposals: –UNEP- regulating function of wetlands in Volta and Mekong ($200K) –IUCN-led Project on ESS of natural wetlands in Africa ($1 mill) –To GIZ (Euro1.2 mill) on small vs large storage options in Africa –Climate change impacts on irrigation in Africa (IFPRI WB proposal, 1 mill) Flood risk assessment and inundation mapping in SA and SEA. Potential link to insurance industry New Partnerships: –ICHARM (Japan – UNESCO Center) –Tufts U (USA) –ICIMOD (Nepal) – finally! Major issue – immediate bilateral funding need for: –UTF –“Reservoir wetlands” idea

AC 4.2 - Allocation Several CIAT PES projects, 2 WF Mekong dam-fish projects IFPRI: proof-of-concept—global water quality threats in agriculture, experimental games for enhanced water allocation, global water futures Book ICARDA: Orontes basin water accounting WB approached IWMI to do a basin-wide scoping study on erosion and sedimentation in Brahmaputra basin. Not WEL, but…Draft proposal submitted Johan Rockstrom suggests to revisit the global study on EF in the context of planetary boundaries. Who will fund?

AC 4.3 Energy (WE 4 Food) Cross-SRP proposal (Basins and RRR - $1.2 mill) submitted to USAID on clean energy / water options in India IFPRI Hydropower-vs biofuel study across key WLE basins ($240K) Discussions with Y. Kura and E. Baran (WF) to undertake a study on Solar vs HP in Mekong ( fisheries being the major player with 40-80% dependency on fish protein in riparian countries)

AC 4.4- Data and Water Accounting Three new products suggested (see separate note): –Basin Kits (first cut for all WEL Basins - by mid 2014) –Basin WA (annual product from 2014 onwards) – will fit into IWMI Brand and WEL Brand –Basin Books (first 5 - by end 2015, subject to funds) WA+ - possibilities to leverage funds from CRP1.2 in Mekong? – under discussion

Events – past and planned IIASA hosted meeting of the new major initiative “Water Futures and Solutions (Feb 2013, Austria). 7 mill Euro program till 2016 that seeks global, regional and specific basin projections of water availability and use by 2050. WLE can play a role WWDR4 of UN-Water powered by WWAP. Theme – “Energy and water”. Expect requests for input in March Mekong Environmental Symposium (last week, Saigon, VN). Presentations by IWMI and WF – about 10 in total. Good WEL visibility in the region Cross-SRP workshop (Irrigation and Basins) Water management in east Ganges Basin. Early May, Delhi. Events – past and planned -2 Stockholm WS on “Bridging water-land-ecosystem divide” – all SRPs Global Water System Project of ESSP – May 21-24, Bonn. –Claudia and Vlad co-fund WEL participation –2 special sessions on AC 4.3 and additional IWMI participation –Plan to also do a one-session length introduction on WEL or add into the special sessions an overview on WEL IWMI “Techies” go WEL. 3-d annual meeting of IWMI techies will be hosted by ICRAF and co-hosted by CIAT. Nairobi, Kenya, 11- 14 June. Focus: Basins and Information SRPs’ collaboration IWMI is to drop its WATERSIM global hydro-economic model and to get in bed with IFPRI to ensure IMPACT. IWMI scientist to visit IFPRI in May.
