2 Definition: A noun is a word or word group that is used to name a person, a place, a thing, or an idea. There are six types of nouns: common, proper, compound, concrete, abstract, and collective

3 For Example. . . Persons: President Bush, teacher, chef, Dr. Smith
Places: Grand Canyon, city, Chicago, kitchen Things: lamp, granite, Nobel Prize, Golden Gate Bridge Ideas: happiness, self-control, liberty, bravery

4 Proper Nouns: A proper noun names a particular person, place, thing, or idea and begins with a capital letter: Hillary Duff United States Lincoln Memorial The Eagles Greatest Hits The Outsiders Catholicism

5 Common Nouns: A common noun names any one of a group of persons, places, things, or ideas and is not capitalized: girl country monument compact disc book religion

6 Compound Nouns: A compound noun is a single noun made up of two or more words used together. The compound noun may be written as one word, as a hyphenated word, or as two or more words.

7 Types of compound nouns:
One Word: grandmother, basketball, cowboy Hyphenated Word: mother-in-law, light-year Two or More Words: grand piano, jumping jack, University of Iowa

8 Nouns are multiple types:
University of Iowa: proper, compound, concrete self-control: common, compound, abstract girl: common, concrete
