Introducing Polymers Polymers are plastics, most plastics are made from molecules derived from oil. Plastics are long-chains molecules called polymers, plastics are formed when lots of small molecules are combined together which is called monomers and when the small molecules are combined they form polymers. Weak Forces-Long chains that are held together by weak forces can slide over each other which means that the plastics are stretchy and will have a low melting point. Strong Forces- Plastics with stronger bonds between polymer chains can’t be stretched, since the cross link are held tightly it will have a high melting point. 3 Biological Polymers Biological polymers are large molecules formed together by monomers. Biological polymers are important, since they are the components of our food. The 3 major polymers- CarbohydrateFatsProteins

Carbohydrate Carbohydrate- made by combining monosaccharides Carbohydrate monomers include sucrose, glucose, and fructose. Carbohydrate can form huge molecules with a lot of sugars combined together in a long chain…eg. Starch… used by plant to store sugar for energy and glycogen is used to store sugar for energy in the human liver.

Fats Fats- made by combining fatty acids and glycerol Fats can be saturated and unsaturated. Saturated have single bonds. Unsaturated contain double bonds. Saturated fats in a diet can increase the chances of coronary heart disease. From

Proteins Proteins are made from the monomer –(amino acids) There are about 20 different types of amino acids in humans The amino acid monomer forms a long chains

AOI- Health and Social Education Health and Social Education deals with the questions how do I think and act ?How am I changing ? How can I look after myself and others ? We should be aware of the issues we face, reflect on actions we take and make decisions and take action that will lead to a healthier life.
