1 Hand Grip Strength Test Module

2 Contents Each site will receive one hand grip dynamometer case containing: –1 x Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer –1 x Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer Instruction Manual –1 x Jamar Certificate of Calibration

3 Parts of a Dynamometer After removing the Dynamometer, check that the black Gauge Needle is above the “0”.

4 If the gauge needle is not above the zero, remove the crystal and using a flathead screw driver move the needle until it is set above the “0” mark Resetting the Gauge Needle

Rotate the red Peak-Hold Needle counter- clockwise to zero Preparation for the Test Have the patient grip and place the strap on the wrist of their dominant hand Pass the Dynamometer to the patient Do not hold Dynamometer from the gauge (top)

6 If the handle feels too large or small for the patient to grip comfortably, remove Dynamometer from the patient and adjust accordingly as shown Adjusting the Handle

7 Have the patient sit upright in a chair with an arm rest. The patients elbow should be at a 90˚ angle Have the patient squeeze with their maximum strength. Sustain for 5 seconds. The peak-hold needle will automatically record the highest force exerted Conducting the Test

8 Record the peak value in pounds (inside dial) as shown by the red Peak-Hold Needle Repeat test 2 more times Sterilize Dynamometer with an alcohol wipe between patients Conducting the Test This would be a reading of 120 pounds.
