Complex Aerospace Systems Exchange (CASE) Event

2 New Conference/Event Offering Complex Aerospace Systems Exchange.  Pasadena Convention Center, Pasadena, CA  September 11-13, 2012 Conference Leadership:  Executive Chair: Mike Griffin (Director, Center for System Studies, UAH)  General Chair: Laura McGill (Raytheon Missile Systems)  Program Chairs: –Paul Collopy (UAH, Center for System Studies) –Allen Arrington (Sierra Lobo, TFOME contract at NASA GRC) –Abdi Khodadoust (Boeing Engineering Operations & Technology) Three general focus areas (conference tracks):  Complex Systems Development  Integration, Test, and Verification of Complex Systems  Program Management and Support for Complex Aerospace Systems

3 Complex Aerospace Systems Exchange Target audience:  Chief Engineers.  Program/Project Managers.  Engineers transitioning from technology-focused to systems-related projects. Updated look and feel for an AIAA event.  Will NOT be the same old technical paper session driven conference.  Much more management and program/project management.  Looking to build sessions/panels on complex systems topics and issues. Exchange of ideas, lessons learned.  Transformational event; leave the event thinking differently.  Gain tools and insight from the conference that will allow participants to learn about “the good, the bad and the ugly.”

What to Expect at CASE Distinct sessions that contribute to a broad theme and address specific problems and issues Case studies and war stories from pioneers that have successfully executed complex systems, and have the scars to back them up Hallway discussions and valuable networking as part of the program in the session rooms, not just during the coffee breaks Engaged, expert speakers more interested in facilitating dialog with participants than providing one-way monologues at attendees 4

What to Expect at CASE (continued) Opportunities for program managers and chief engineers to interact with their peers and colleagues in a non-attributable, neutral environment Less emphasis on technical paper presentations and more emphasis on information and idea exchange Action plans developed out of the sessions to facilitate continued discussion and engagement via virtual means throughout the year 5

6 Track 1 Complex System Development  Forensic investigations dealing with problems rooted in design, verification and validation.  Elegant designs and new paradigms for complex systems development

7 Track 2 Integration, Test, and Verification  Development and execution of integrated test and verification programs  Ground tests versus flight test  Facility limitations and availability  Integration of M&S, ground, environmental, and flight testing  Verification and validation

8 Track 3 Program Management & Support  Execution of Successful Programs  Acquisition and Regulatory Issues  Business Operations and Logistics Support  Workforce Issues

9 CASE Event Program Format

CASE Event Track and Session Layout 10

Who Should Attend Chief engineers and program managers of major aerospace systems, both corporate and government Current and aspiring system engineering practitioners Business managers Government acquisition, procurement, and oversight personnel System operators Supplier and sub-contractor project managers Component and subsystem design engineers looking to better understand how their work fits in a broader system context 11

Who Should Attend (continued) Academic researchers interested in state of the art system engineering principles and requirements Mid career professionals moving from technology into Integrated Project Team lead positions Early career professionals with an interest in system engineering disciplines and principles 12

Advantages to be Gained from Attending You will leave this event with practical knowledge and ideas that you can apply to your work immediately You will be a part of and shape the discussion rather than being a passive listener You will have the opportunity to focus on a single track over the course of the event or to mix and match the conversations you choose to be a part of You will hear multiple sides of complex issues rather than company “commercials” or one dimensional insights You will help to shape a future direction for AIAA to continue to address this critical area 13
