5 Robert E. Lee Confederate vs. Meade, Union General One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War was fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 1-3, 1863. General Robert E. Lee came face to face with a Union army led by General George Meade.

8 Significance of the Battle 51,000 soldiers dead, wounded, or missing during the three day battle. Gettysburg kept the war in the South.
